COMMUNITY PROJECTS
NATIVE SCHOOL GARDENS
For any garden’s longevity, its stewards must be invested. And while many school projects are typically championed by one (amazing!) dedicated staff member, we believe that gardens must be rooted in community.
REVOLU’s process starts with students by implementing STUDENT-LED DESIGN. Students get a crash course in the beauty, benefits and ecological necessity of native plants, collectively choose which plants they want to include, and exercise their creative brains by collaborating on a planting plan.
REVOLU also works to build a supportive coalition around the students——made up of dedicated staff members and parent volunteers. Adults are invited to not only participate in the garden build, but to also learn along the way. Think book clubs, garden work days, ongoing workshops.
It’s about empowering the entire school community to take ownership of the project rather than outsourcing care to outsiders. This not only saves costs, but also helps maintain a direct connection to the garden students, staff and parents worked so hard to build!
One of REVOLU’s philosophies: Gardens are for everyone. The best garden is never gated, closed off, or exclusive. Rather, a successful school garden invites students (and other beings) to be curious, explore, make mistakes and learn from them.
